HAND IN HAND we walk into church. Vance and I were both raised in the Catholic Church and community. My mum never missed a Mass, a church event, or a church gathering. Her faith is deeply rooted. My dad missed occasionally for work purposes but holds tight to his faith as well.
Since learning all the true fun facts of Vance’s family, their faith is for show. But not Vance. In our year of living together, I’ve realized he has true faith and does his best to stick to it.
He leads us to the middle of the church and finds two seats for us. I glance around the sanctuary and see more people filing in. Lots of the congregation are aware Vance and I are in an arranged marriage. It is an old and dying out tradition but some in our community hold tight to it. Many who went to our church in Northern Ireland were in arranged marriages and when I told people I went to school with, they didn’t seem to be shocked by it.
However, here in America, it’s a completely different subject. Harlow is still shocked of our arrangement as are Vance’s teammates. I think they’re used to the idea now. The big question is: will we arrange our children? It’s a topic neither of us has talked about. I know we’re both avoiding it.
As Mass ends we all stand and shuffle toward the doors. A few members speak to us, but we make it out without too many deep conversations.
Vance drives us to the grocery store and together we maneuver through the aisles and grab items we need. We don’t need much since Vance leaves tomorrow for training camp. He grabs some snack items, but mostly it’s stuff for us at the house.
When we make it home, we work together to unload it all.
“I’m hungry,” Vance speaks up.
“Me too. How about I change and whip up something?” I suggest.
“I have missed your cooking.” He gives me a swift kiss. “I’ll empty out the bags and start some laundry.”
I smile. It seems like something a married couple would do. It warms my heart we’re comfortable with each other. Then again, we’ve been together for a year now. We do have a routine, somewhat. It’ll change now since Aimee and Ned are gone.
I change out of my church outfit and into a pair of shorts and a tank top. It’s very warm outside and even a little bit in the house. Perfect for grilling. I go out to the deck and grab the charcoal and lighter fuel. Once I get a hot flame going, I head back into the house and season the steaks. I’m not a huge steak eater, but today seems perfect for one.
After placing everything on the grill, I thought about making baked potatoes, but I ended up going with corn on the cob and a salad. I found all the recipes on the internet. I’ve always loved to cook. Some of my earliest memories are of Mum and me in the kitchen.
